This is the second post on how to learn and pass English. Some of the tips and techniques mentioned here can also be applied to other languages as well. If you haven’t done so already, I’d invite you to read the first post in this series entitled how to pass English.

In the first part we covered reading, the issue of communication and what we called the two P:s namely patience and perseverance. In this part let us instead of discussing the prerequisites of learning the language give some practical advice on how to go about learning English.

1. Daily schedule

Begin by making your very own daily reading schedule. Each week pick out a different book that you want to finish reading within that week. In the beginning the book might not be that very thick but that’s OK, when it comes to languages we begin from scratch and work our way up. You should be making progress for every week that passes by. A good way to keep track of your progress is by making a simple chart where you track your development as it goes. A basic table could look something like this:

Week

Book

Pages

1

Name of book

44

2

Name of book

67

3

Name of book

95

4

Name of book

140

5

Name of book

169

6

Name of book

187

7

Name of book

210

If you want to I can try to provide a printable version of that above table, please leave a comment if you’re interested in such a document.

2. Listening

When listening to someone speaking English and he or she used a word or phrase that you are not familiar with, make sure you ask the person what that word meant. If you leave it to the future, chances are that you won’t ever learn it. Once you’ve acquired a new word make sure you try to use it yourself in a dialogue with someone else. By practicing using new words you will remember them easily in the future.

3. Speaking

Don’t be afraid to commit mistakes when you’re speaking the language, it’s entirely normal. Also, don’t settle speaking adequately if you can learn to speak fluently. There are lots of people who have learnt this language in their later years and have managed to comprehend it’s grammar and pronounce the words correctly, why not do the same?

If you are speaking to someone and you can see them react when you say a word in a particular fashion do ask them what – if anything – you did wrong in pronouncing that word. Sometimes people might feel shy or rude to correct you but in reality it is also somewhat rude to leave you thinking that you’re doing something right when you’re in fact doing it wrong. I’d rather be corrected (and I commit a lot of mistakes, that’s for sure) than to be left thinking that I was correct even though that wasn’t the case.

In closing don’t forget to check out our very own learning guide to help you out with your studies. Until next time, have a pleasant day!

Learning a new language and want to know how to best tackle it? Nadas problemas, just follow the guidelines set up in this article to get going!
You see, there are a number of things to consider when learning a new language.

1. Establish The Purpose

Why are you learning this particular foreign language and not another one. Are you 100% absolutely sure that you are willing to invest the energy, money and most importantly the time that it takes to learn a new language. If no, please take some time to think things through. It is often easier to change track in the beginning.

2. Be structured

You are by no means obliged to enroll in a language course in able to learn a new language (even though that might be helpful), however it is important that you study in a structured and organized manner. Make sure you are always keen on observing the time that you have allocated to study. Don’t put it off! If you for instance would only study as little as 1 hour per day you would learn the basics of that language within a few weeks. The more time you invest the more you’ll be able to learn.

3. Don’t forget about pronunciation

You can’t claim to have mastered a language until you are speaking in a fashion that is understandable by native speakers of that language. Put some extra time to learn how to pronounce all the letters and make sure you verify that your pronunciation is indeed correct. Remember, you should put some extra energy into pronunciation in the beginning of your journey. Once you’ve grasped how letters and words are pronounced it is fairly easy to guess how a new similarly structured word ought to be pronounced.

4. Grammar is key

There are different theories on how to best learn a language but they all include someway or another the acquiring the internal logic of that language, otherwise knows as its rules of grammar. Studying directly and exclusively from a grammar book may not be the best way to achieve results. Instead make sure you have a solid textbook + a grammar book that is used as a way of reference and not as the primary literature.

5. Compile word lists

Whenever you learn a new word be sure to place it in your word list. The longer time you study the language the larger that list should become. Make sure you rehearse the list every now and then to make sure that you still remember the old words.

6. Track Progress
How can you know if you’re improving if you aren’t tracking your progress? Define explicit goals; when do you want o be able to communicate in that language, how many words do you wish to have learned before the end of the year and so forth. The beauty with goals is that it gives you a frame of reference, an ability to see where you’re doing fine and where there’s need of progress.

7. Immerse yourself into the language

Don’t limit yourself to textbooks. Immerse yourself into the world of that language, if you truly want to learn a new language you need to talk, walk and breath in that language!

This post is part of a series, I would -as always- appreciate it to hear what you have to say on this. A good way too keep up with new updates on the subject is by subscribing to this blog.

It’s been a while since we did this series, hasn’t it? On day 4 we will examine how a writer can find inspiration. It’s funny how I decided to write about this subject by the way. You see, I was pondering on this issue (what I should write about) so I decided I might as well look into how I could find inspiration to write this blog…

So I decided to writer about finding what I was searching for in the first place. Weird.

How To Find Inspiration

Anyway, finding inspiration for writing is not only experienced by those who write fiction such as poetry, novels etc but it could also face those write scientific literature & research papers.

I am not talking about writers block which is a closely related problem that I’ve been discussing here: How To Overcome Writers Block, but I’m talking about the total lack of inspiration or an “inspiration block” if you would like.

The funny thing is, the most random piece of information can remove this inspirational block so it’s very difficult to find methods to get inspiration. I would thus say that if you are looking for inspiration, then try to remember how you found inspiration the last time you wrote this article/paper or what ever.

Hello, how’s it going? I thought I might talk about an interesting issue today, namely, foreign languages. Why on earth would you need to learn a foreign language? Well for starters, the more languages you know the greater your perspective will be.

You can understand different people and cultures more efficiently and this may even open up some new opportunities in the future. So, what is the best way to learn a new language? Here is how I would do it:

1. Grammar is necessary but not all

I’m afraid it’s an all too common mistake to spend too much time on grammar. This is not to say that grammar isn’t important, because it is. I’m just saying that you should not be obsessed with it. You should always try to learn the most vital parts first and more importantly; be very vigilant about patterns.

The more you study a language, the more you will come to notice all the different patterns. Just think about how the native population learned their language in the first place. Most of them can speak the language without ever having the need to study grammar. Why is that? Well, since their language is so deeply rooted in their lives and they’ve learned all the different patterns they really don’t really need to “study grammar”.

2. Always recite!

Recitation is the art of reading out something loud, whether that be a poet who is reciting poetry, a teacher who is narrating a story or a muslim who’s reciting the Koran. Why would we need to read out loud when learning a new language? Firstly, because studies have shown that you learn words faster this way than if you would read them quietly and secondly, your pronunciation of words will sound much more natural if you recite them.

3. Memorization is key

I know, this may be the most boring part but I believe it’s the most important one. You have to try to learn a fix amount of new words each day or week. Without a strong and solid vocabulary, I’m afraid you will never learn the language properly. There are no real secrets here but you might want to check out this post earlier entitled: How to memorize fast.

I would also recommend you to begin by learning all the prepositions, question words, a few adjectives, and some nouns. These are really the pillars of any language; through words like these you can understand most sentences, even though the sentence may have a few words you can’t comprehend, simply through context.

4. Resources = Very Important

Make sure you have a lot of different resources to assist you in this struggle. There are three things you can do here;

1. Subscribe To This Blog. This will notify you of any future entries, some of which include language tips such as this post.

2. Language Tools. You can check the page where I’ve collected some free language software just for you.

3. Study Guide. This one is not free but it’s by far my best work on how to boost your learning skills. Check it out!

This post is part of a series, I would -as always- appreciate it to hear what you have to say on this. A good way too keep up with new updates on the subject is by subscribing to this blog.

Do you know what most great writers have in common? The first thing that come to mind is that they all seem to have a large amount of writing resources. For instance, your brain is one of the most powerful resources you posses. But the problem is that the brain often needs a little push in order to generate the wonders you need. This is what you should do to help the brain:

1. Be apart of a particular writing niche

It doesn’t matter if it’s writing poetry, leaflets or sales letters. They all have one thing in comment: A living community! Resources are vital for success in your area, if other people already have taken the route, why not study their results before you join in?

2. Do you have the supplies?

You should always have the stuff you need on supply without having the need to stress in the future. For example, people tend to lack the supply of computer ink. I don’t know why, but for some reason they do. Price is no longer an issue considering the internet revolution. I found this great offer (see below). They even give you Free Shipping + 10% off if you decide to order from my link

-
You have to try this offer, Amazing price (up to 80% Cheaper!) and customer service. My favorite ink company by far, period

3. Let Writing be A part of Your life!

Obviously it shouldn’t take over your whole life but it should be noted that you are indeed a writer by the way are. For instance, writers always carry pen and paper with where ever they go. Do you do the same thing? It is pretty logical, I mean a businessman always has his business card, hence a writer should always be equipped with a pen.

A good way too keep up with new updates on the subject is by subscribing to this blog.

Today we are going to discuss the importance of revising ones content. I’ve divided the post into these following categories:

1. Grammar

Yes, it is boring and tiring but it still remains as a very essential part of your writing. Try to highlight (in your memory) words that you often misspell so you know them in the future. The only way to really get rid of this defect is by reading books a lot, not only do you get learn new words, improve your grammar but you also start reading faster.
Tip: You could always look at the Wikipedia entry for common misspellings and words that are frequently misused.

2. Misplaced words

I have to admit, ever since MS Word and other popular word processing applications started correcting misspelled words this problem has decreased dramatically. Albeit, they managed to fix misspellings but they did not manage to fix misplaced words or an irrational word order (except to a small degree). Never put your trust on a machine, be sure to always revise it your self!

3. Make someone else read it

OK, so no you’ve read it through, revised it and fixed all possible grammatical issues. Now what? A good idea would be to make someone else read your content and give feedback. Why?

Because generally we tend to miss mistakes we’ve made, after all we are reading the text with a subjective eye, right? Also, don’t get all to frustrated if the reader gave you some negative feedback. This only benefits you… hopefully

Writers block is something many people have been afflicted with in the past and most of us are well aware of the frustration it brings. How can you overcome it?

1. Brainstorming

This is an excellent way to start of a new project/assignment, why? Because it gives you a great overview of the complete work and you lets you spot any hidden obstacles. You might want to check out this article I wrote on mind mapping.

2. Just write!

Sounds easier than it is? Well not really, what I mean by proclaiming “Just write” is to do just that. Write without worrying of the context, your grammar or anything else! Why? Because its a whole lot easier to deal with a half-ugly draft than it is to start from scratch.

3. Take a walk

This technique should not be misoverestimated (I really like that word); taking a walk in the forest and inhaling some fresh air could do wonders. I personally get tons of ideas when just walking, if you are like me I recommend you to bring your notebook with you when walking. We wouldn’t want those awesome ideas to vanish!
