How to Write an Essay Exam

2 min read

Writing essays on an exam isn't the same as answering simple questions on a conventional exam. Some people prefer the essay format, while others would rather be judged on a plain old exam where all the questions are straightforward. In this guide, you'll learn how to write your essay on an exam.

1. Have a plan

You'll need a basic plan for how to face the exam. In general, there's no secret formula for what the essay should look like beyond the instructions your teacher gives. However, if you've already prepared a plan for tackling it, you've won half the battle.

Before you take the exam, prepare as much as possible. Get hold of previous exams, or ask the teacher how the questions will be phrased and how they want them answered.

2. Don't worry about the details

Start writing. It doesn't matter if you're unsure whether you spelled a word correctly or if you messed up your grammar. You can (and should) fix these kinds of details later, once your essay is complete. For now, the most important thing is to get some words down on paper.

3. Did you forget the milk?

Have you ever been asked to buy milk on your way home, decided you might as well pick up a few other things, and ended up buying lots of other stuff but forgetting the milk? It happens to pretty much all of us. It's easy to forget the most important thing when you have lots of other things to consider as well.

That's why I recommend jotting down all the essential topics your essay needs to cover before you write it. Starting out this way makes it easier not to leave out anything important.

4. It has to be captivating

Just because an essay contains all the most important information doesn't necessarily mean it's good. Your essay needs to be written in a structured and precise manner. It also needs to be captivating. If the reader doesn't feel drawn into your work, it is lacking something.

It takes time to develop the extra "something" that separates an okay essay from a remarkable one. To build this skill, you need to practice a lot, and even if you already have it, you need to keep practicing so you don't lose it.
